Here we go!

VBS is coming!!

46 days to launch!!

Are you planning to be a part of the best week of the summer?!?!?

I hope so!   June 26 – 30   9 AM – Noon

I’ve started this blog to help us prepare for VBS.  Not the “prepare” that we’re used to … not the decorating and shopping and list-making and gluing and cutting and painting.  A different kind of prepare.

In order to pour into someone else, we first have to get filled up ourselves.  We have to sit at the feet of Jesus.  We have to experience Him.  So this is a place to help us do that.  To challenge each other to take the time to put aside our Martha busyness and be Marys for a bit.

So … what is Galactic Starveyors?

Galactic Starveyors is a week of searching the visible to discover the invisible.  We’re going out into the backyard with 150 plus kids from our community to look through our giant telescopes at the wonders of God’s universe.

And the question we’ll explore is … “How can we know a God we cannot see?”

How would you answer that question?  Post your answers in the comment section at the end of this blog.   It will be great to see what everyone has to say.  There’s no right or wrong answer …

We’ll show kids that the evidence of God is all around them.  And we’ll share with them that the God of the universe wants to have a relationship with them.

The God who created everything there is – the unknowable, the visible and the invisible – wants a relationship with them!

Jesus was God in the flesh.  He was the image of the invisible God.  Our scripture for the week of VBS is Colossians 1:15-16…

He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation. For everything was created by Him, in heaven and on earth, the visible and the invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities—all things have been created through Him and for Him.

We will teach this to the kids!!

The whole thing …

To little kids.

Even 5 year-olds.

Every day.

And yes, it’s long.

But it’s good to hide God’s Word in our hearts.

Don’t worry –

We won’t do it all at once – we’ll break it up into pieces.

So – here we go!  Are you ready?

We’re going to learn it before we try to teach it!

Here’s this week’s assignment:

Memorize this!

He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation.

It’s just the first 13 words.

Write it down and put it on your bathroom mirror or refrigerator.

Read it often.

Draw it out in a picture to help you remember it.

Make up motions for it.

Sing it.

Whisper it.

Shout it.

A lot.

To your kids.

To your dog.

The sky’s the limit – do whatever it takes to get it in your memory!

You only have this week to memorize this part.  Or you’ll be behind.  A new section of this passage will come next week and each week leading up to VBS.

I’ll be sending out questions and tips throughout the weeks ahead to help us along the way …

As an incentive … yes, admit it – we all like prizes … anyone who can recite this at our meeting the day before VBS begins will be awarded a prize!

Be a master memorizer this year!  Prepare your heart for a week of seeing God bigger than you ever have before!

Looking forward to our journey together –

Laura

  • To answer the question, How can we know a God we cannot see, I would say as an adult, there are so many situations we would not have gotten through had it not been for having faith that God is there even if I couldn’t see Him physically. Having the blessing of seeing something I’ve been praying for come to fruition shows me He’s here. Reading His word and learning and understanding how His plan from the beginning unfolds throughout the entire Bible is ongoing for me but constantly reveals to me He is here. Thinking back to when I was a kid, I remember the first time I saw the Rocky Mountains in Colorado and I was overwhelmed by how big they are and realized, Wow! God created these!! How cool is that!! Even though He can’t be physically seen, there are so many things surrounding us that show He is there! Just taking the time to look around at creation shows how big He is and that He is all around us. Watching a bee fly from flower to flower to get pollen to take back to the hive and knowing that particular bee has a particular job and knows how what what it is supposed to do is just amazing! There are so many ways He is revealed when I stop and take the time to look.

  • How do we know a God we cannot see? Well, as a mom, I see God in the amazing boys God created that are a perfect mix of me and their daddy. As a wife, I see God in the way he brought Brian and me together at just the right time (long story…). As an employee, I see God in his provision of a job at just the right time, in his provision of amazing coworkers who believe in God, and in the students I get to work with every day. And as someone who is relearning science to teach my boy, I see God in the amazing works of his creation.

  • Sounds great Laura! Thanks for all your time and effort in choosing a good VBS curriculum.

Romans 1:20 “For since the creation of the world His invisible attributes, His eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly seen, being understood through what has been made, so that they are without excuse.”
The beauty and organization of creation reveal the love and design of a Divine Creator.

  • AWESOME!!!!!! I am sooooooo excited. I think it will be fun,; especially for my last year. Keep up the good work 😉

  • Great Job Laura!
Hind sight is 20/20, as I look back on my life I see all the places that His plans, ways, provisions, guidance, and love, has been steadfast. Even when I was trembling, crying, mad, happy, scared, or barely holding on. That in those moments He was there. I might of thought he was invisible, but now, looking back, I can clearly see Him in those moments. That the Bible is His way of providing that hindsight all the way to the beginning, proof that He has ALWAYS been here and will ALWAYS be here!!!

  • I’m not a computer guy but this will surely be a blessing for the body to come together, seeking Jesus in all the details of VBS. God can be known. His evidence for being is in and around all facets of life. Mostly I “see” Him in the faces of my brothers and sisters in Christ. The Holy Spirit gives continual testimony to us of His presence. The question is am I listening? Am I looking? Last thought God is not hiding.Love you all!

Oh yes, I am blessed to see the love and grace of Jesus in my wife (you’re awesome Hun).

    I’m done now. 🙂

  • OK, so I’m signed up to help coordinate the science area. I have spent some time thinking (and praying) about how to best show evidence of the invisible God through His creation of the heavens. Wow…there is some really cool information available on that! I’ve known for a long time about how huge creation is but there is a lot of new data available that shows how much more has been discovered. I found a couple of Louie Giglio videos that really illustrate things well. (Our memory verse is actually about 4 minutes, 45 seconds into the first video)

    • I was going to recommend Louie Giglio, Chris. I have heard some of his talks, and they are amazing. I may have one on DVD/CD at home. If so, I will get it to you in case you want to use it at VBS. Now, on to memorizing the second part of the verse…

  • My verse is hanging on my fridge, and the girls and I have been practicing it randomly through out our days. Drawing it out with you at the planning meeting was a huge help, but my kiddos are MOVERS! So we have been looking up ASL signs to go with it. We broke it up sentence by sentence and it’s really coming together!

Thank you Chris for posting those links! I am catching up on reading the blog posts and those are awesome! Can’t wait to share with the girls!
